The 4th Annual Duel in the Dungeon will be held Saturday, January 17th, 2009. There have been a few changes made to the format of this race, but it will still offer the same close competition as seen the previous 3 years. Here is some info:

-Doors open at 10am. Practice will begin at 10:30, if need be, will be in a controlled format to eliminate carnage. Racing will begin at 3PM.

-To start on time, Sign-ups will close at 2:30 PM SHARP!

-There will be a quick drivers meeting at 2:50 to cover a few basics that most everyone already knows, but still need to be reminded to some.

-All qualifying heats will be Ifmar starts. There will be 2 rounds.

-All A Mains will be 125 Laps. All lower mains will be 4 minutes and have bump ups. All Mains will be heads up, not ifmar stlye.

-Classes are as follows:
-1/10 Stock Slider
-1/10 Open Sprint (19T/13.5)
-1/10 Truck
-Small Block EDM (27T/17.5)

-All our current rules apply. They can be read here:
http://www.dirtoval.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32480

-Entry fee is per class.

This race has been very competitive in each of the previous 3 years, especially in the Big Block Stock Class where there has been a different winner each year, and this year should be no different. There are plenty of spaces to pit, in addition to there being extra room for those who would like to bring there own tables.

Team Orion Vortex Experience Combo Problem

December 30th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in RC Car Deals
Hi, everyone.

I am completely new to brushless motor systems, so please bear with me. My son has the following setup:

Car: Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 RTR
Radio: Stock 27 MHz Radio System (that came with the the car)
Motor & ESC: ORI66007 Vortex Combo BL experience buggy
with 40A controller
Battery: Team Orion Rocket Pack 3900 mAh Ni-MH
Gear Ratio: 25/76

We initially had stuttering/hesitation problem both in reverse and in initial throttle. Our local hobby shop thought that it was due to the radio system glitches, but after a couple days of casual test drives, it stopped and run with almost no power (the battery was full-charged). I noticed that the ESC and the motor were hot and giving off smoky smell, so I unplugged everything and gave them some rest. When I test the system again, the ESC started to get hot immediately after giving a tiny bit of throttle while the motor is still cool. I was wondering if this was still due to the radio system glitches, or there is something wrong with the brushless motor or the ESC (or both). I know that the gear ratio is too high for a brushless motor, but I did not think that it would cause a problem. I would appreciate any suggestion or comment. Thanks!

concerns, frustrations & quality control

December 30th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in RC Car Deals
i need to vent and express some concerns and opinions, but mostly frustrations, and ask a few questions in the process. i’ve been involved in the RC car hobby for a little over 10 year’s. i’ve seen it grow, expand, jump from one fad to the next, iv seen company’s switch hands, watched cars and drivers come and go, and watched hobby shops and race tracks come and go.

The hole breaking point for this soap box bit stems from my XXXT. back in i think it was 2001 it was a state of the art race truck. now i just bashed it, never did race it. i’ve done some pretty idiotic things with it over the years, such as jumping it off the roof of the house and driving it up a tree. it was all in good fun. the truck virtually never broke. and when it did 8 bucks, a trip to the hobby shop and 5 – 10 minutes of wrench time is all it took to have it in like new condition. the parts you would buy were the exact parts you just broke. the fit and finish was identical! you could tell that quality was definitely a priority. do to other obligations and lack of radio gear the truck sat idle for probably about 4 years. fast forward to the end of summer 2008 and i dig the truck back out. notice there are a few parts starting to go south on it (they were just flat worn out). it needs to be cleaned up, gone though and rebuilt. i go through, compile a list of “necessary” parts and attach it to my Christmas list. well i got the parts. when i went to put them on the truck, holy crap it was a nightmare. i had to file down the edges of the rear pivot plate to make it fit in the chassis, and the front kick up and tranny case so much access flashing it was insane. i actually cut my finger on the tranny case taking it out of the bag! im thinking they have been making this parts for 8 years, it’s the same damn part number, what the hell could have changed? why aint the fit and finish like it used to be? i get the truck back together. run a few packs through it, everything’s going good. take the truck off the ramp, catch about 5 feet of air (nothing new for that truck), landed beautifully on all 4’s and herd a snap. im thinking well there goes that 6 year old worn out graphite A arm. i pick the truck up, the brand spanking new rear chassis plate is now 2 peaces. im having a hard time wrapping my head around why a company that’s been battling it out on top of the podium for 25 years all of the sudden makes such shoddy parts. its also got me wondering if all the new XXX and XXXT’s are like this. hell are all there car’s and parts like this?

A few days ago I got my hands on a HPI sprint 2 sport and a HPI nitro RS4 3. i’m remembering the old days of the RS4 and nitro RS4 2’s. and after giving the new car’s going’s over all i can think is wow, how the intermediate have fallen, i think ill just stick with my nitro RS4 2 thank you very much. a beginner based car is not a replacement for an intermediate level racer! that’s why racing is dieing right there!

i just can’t shake why it seems lesser quality products considered acceptable buy not only the company, but by us the hobbyist’s? 10 years ago we wouldn’t have put up with this. why are we not demanding the same near perfection we were getting 8+ years ago from the bigger company’s? is it from all the noob’s that don’t know any better? is it because to many people are buying them and we can no longer produce quality parts and keep up with demand at the same time? is it because of all the newer company’s? is it because of the all the knock offs? why does it seem like things are going down the crapper? has it gotten so big that we can no longer support the hole realm of things? has it reached a point of having to make as much money as possible on the current fad so that we can afford the next fad leaving everything behind it to decay into nothing because the thought and financial support just isn’t there because its all into the next new thing? what the hell is going on?

Attention 1/8 Scale Nitro-Off Road Racers:

We are finalizing the ’09 schedule for THE RC TRACKS AT MILESTONE MX PARK.

We need feedback from the 1/8 scale nitro racers in our area as to when you want to race/practice and what type of track you want. We have equipment on site in order to make necessary changes to the track.

We are having a 1/5 Scale Off-Road Race this Saturday(January 3rd) and would welcome some of you coming out to give it a try and let me know what we need to do to make a competitive and challenging track for 1/8 Scale.

PLEASE CALL Larry Cross at 909-987-7745, let me know if you can make it Saturday. If you can’t I would still like to speak with you to get your thoughts.

How hard do you crawl?

December 30th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in RC Car Deals
There is some info in other threads that makes me wonder... There are a lot of drivers who use light servos (200in/oz or less) and are happy with them.
I've driven with people who exclusively drive scale and treat their trucks like gold, who set up tracks on a relatively calm rock course. This is fun (especially with the camera rolling) because it looks so scale.
I've also driven with a team who sets up courses that look like the Pro-Line challenge and you don't finish well without using dig. These courses break those light servos I mentioned earlier, and you have to beef up the rig just to hang with them.

Do you drive your truck to death? On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being "scared to scratch it" and 10 "my truck is expendable, the trophy isn't".
I think my scale buddies are around 1-5 and the team drivers are 5-10. I'm probably around 7 or 8.
